Release announcement: v2.00

📅 2025-07-23  · ✍️ Bas v.d. Wiel  ·  🏷 announcement

The previous releases were made silently and source-only because the turbulent state of flux the project is still in. This time I’m making an official announcement: version 2.00 just finished building and is ready for use. This version covers IBM PC-DOS 1.00, 1.10 and 2.00 on floppies and hard disk images suitable for their time period. This version is ideal if you want to create disk images for the original IBM 5150 or XT with the proper disk geometries and OS system files in the right place.

You can download release 2.00 from source code or download the binary distribution that holds builds for many popular platforms including the MiSTerFPGA’s ARMv7 environment. Instructions for use are included in the binary distribution file.

Looking forward

Version 3.00 will focus on supporting PC-DOS 3.00 and FAT16 on the technological side of things, but the main focus will be on manifest developer ergonomics. Your feedback and suggestions are more than welcome in this regard.

As I take a short break from developing DOSContainer itself, I’ll be fleshing out a collection of packaged games from the early 1980’s to dogfood my own product. This should give me an idea of where the usability can be improved and how.

Further down the roadmap I intend to support every relevant DOS operating system that was ever made for the IBM and compatible PC’s. If you have any versions of DOS that are not available on sites like WinworldPC or Archive.org, please do drop me a note. If you’re able to supply me with a bootable disk image I’d love to add support for your version.

For now, enjoy DOSContainer v2.00.
